We are so excited to share with you our interview with CEO of aden + anais, Raegan Moya-Jones. Raegan has taken one of her Australian traditions and made it a “must have” for mommies. When she became a mom here in the US, she knew all babies in Australia were swaddled in pure muslin fabric. So, of course she wanted to do the same, but had trouble finding the perfect blanket; they were too big or too small; too thick; not attractive. So she did want any entrepreneurial mom on a mission would do, she created the best for her own babies. It is evident that Raegan puts her heart and soul into designing her products. aden + anais has brought the benefits of swaddling for mom’s and babies to love. We are thrilled to know a little bit more about Raegan Moya-Jones, hope you enjoy reading as well.
1. What inspired you to create your collection?
In 2003, I was expecting my first baby while living in the United States, half a world away from my family, back home in Australia. Like all new mums to be, I was preparing for the baby’s arrival, and one of the must-have “things” that all Australian mums used on their babies were muslin wraps. I looked everywhere for them in the US and not only could I not find them, no one had any clue what I was talking about! I resorted to having my sister send me some from Australia. Upon their arrival it dawned on me that all Australian mums couldn’t have it wrong, and that if I introduced them to American mothers, I knew they would feel the same way. Before I could stop myself, I took a page from Plato’s Republic – inventing by way of necessity – and decided to take matters into my own hands. I co-founded aden + anais® and took my first pack of aden + anais® muslin wraps to market in the US in July 2006. Today, we can be found in twenty countries around the world and in many thousands of stores.
2. If you could pick 3 of your favorite designs from your collection which ones would they be and why?
Princess Posie and Prince Charming simply because they were the designs that started it all and still remain two of my favorites 5 years in, and Super Star because I love the bold colors and simplicity of the design.
3. Your a mom of 3, what advise would you tell a new mommy about getting her to sleep better?
I am actually a mother to four girls now, 7,5,3 and 11 months. It is really all about creating a routine. Babies thrive on routine and I always found that being militant about sleep routines worked in our home. We always put the girls down to sleep swaddled and in their crib at the same time for their morning nap, afternoon nap and evening bedtime. I would give them their milk in the same place (in the rocking chair in their bedroom) read them a story, swaddle them, put them in their crib, turn on the sound machine with white noise when they were very young and a lullaby as they got older and kiss them goodnight. All the girls were sleeping 10-12 hours a night by the time they were 12 weeks old.
4. Tell us more about your swaddle love foundation.
When I started aden + anais®, I made a promise to myself that if the business became successful, I would find a way to “give back.” Moving ahead to 2008, when my husband and I were discussing the possibility of adopting a child for the first time, I was poring over materials about adoption programs and discovered that most orphanages in developing countries were overcrowded and understaffed. As a result, babies are left alone for upwards of 20 hours a day with no human interaction or touch. These orphaned babies heartbreakingly become conditioned not to cry, just because they know no one is coming. After learning about this and having been made aware of a condition called touch deprivation, (whilst writing my book swaddle love) I was compelled to action; I simply couldn’t sit by and not do anything to help, so I set up the Swaddle Love Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to eliminate touch deprivation in orphaned babies around the word.
5. Do you have any future plans you would like to share, maybe new designs or any new products added to the aden + anais collection?
We have got lots of great new designs and products in the pipeline for this year but I can’t share any of it with you just yet…..stay tuned though
