I am a “List” person and love to be organized.  So when I was going through the design process for my children’s nursery, there was no exception.  One of my favorite questions to ask myself was “is this going to be a bedroom and playroom”?  When you answer that question you open up a lot of design options as well.  For example, adding creative storage space for toys and books. I have always loved that my children’s room were also their playrooms, even as babies.   Designer Dad Stephen Saint-Onge says to access storage and rotate toys from week to week so your baby is interested.  I like to hang a book shelf about 5″ from the floor so your little one can explore and pick out their favorite. When picking out your furniture make sure it can grow with your child.  For example, picking out a crib that converts into a full size bed.  Bellini has several different crib models that when converted the front and back head boards are also the head/foot boards of a full size bed.

Define the space, in other words let your little one have an area of the room that can be creative, fun, and their own.  For nurseries you can have area of soft toys and pillows, then change as the baby grows.  I have always like to use chalk board paint on a wall or closet doors, it’s an everlasting creative space for your older toddler or tween.

Meet Annette Tatum

posted by admin No Comments

One of Bellini’s favorite bedding designers is Annette Tatum, the creative mind behind the beautiful designs of House and Little House.  Annette started studying industrial and textile design at UCLA and in 1994 she started Annette Tatum Collections. You will always find her in her studio designing new collections and working on interior design projects.

By the time her secound daughter, Ella, was born, Little House designs were created.  She felt inspired  by childhood and being a new mom so she wanted the prints and patterns to embrace the innocence and personality of a child.

We were thrilled to be able to chat with Annette Tatum and hope you enjoy reading about her.

1. We know you founded your own collection in 1994, what inspired you to start designing baby and children’s bedding? I come from a textile background and had begun making apparel when I first started. Once I started having children nursery bedding was a natural.

2. Out of all of your collections, what is your favorite nursery collection? In our current line I still love Goa. I am a bohemian at heart. From the new collection I love the new Khaki Brocade. It is a colorway that has always been successful for us and I love the Brocade. It is classic.

3. With such a busy work day, how do you balance work, family, and me time? ”I am super organized by nature.. so that helps.” I am also always anticipating what is next. There are always the “curve” balls during the day.. but somehow it all manages to get done. I have learned that nothing is “perfect” and that is ok too.

4. Name 3 words that best describe Annette Tatum Collections?  “Classic, Sophisticated, and Inspiring.”

5. Do you have any future plans you would like to share, maybe new collections or new products? We are introducing our original brand “house” back into the market. “We also have paint, furniture and a new little house collection coming in Spring.” Our pajamas are also being re-introduced this January. “Lots of fun stuff happening.”

We are very excited and looking forward to seeing Little House’s 2012  collections coming out this Spring!

Storage Solutions

OK, so the kids are happy with all of their holiday gifts, so how do we make room for them?  One of my favorite things to do is organize my kids things.  For some reason, I think they will follow my organizational thoughts and keep their room clean.

One of the easiest things to do is get some colored pails or storage bins, label them by toy category and you are done.  I have always loved how Lima Bean Kids makes it so easy for you to color coordinate and personalize their storage pails.

Looking for an easy DIY project, check out these old crates, just paint and hang.  I love that you can color coordinate it to the room and hang them any which way so it’s easy for your kids to reach.

Genius!  Love this creative and fun way of organizing, needs a little more handing power but I love it.  Found this from ohdeedoh, as they say “don’t forget that the floor space is not the only storage space you have to work with”.

Don’t forget your furniture!  Your bookcases and shelving are also perfect for displaying your child’s favorite possessions.  Bellini has beautiful bookcases that will grow with your child’s needs.

Chevron is Chic

Geometric patterns are timeless. Most of my clients agree that floral patterns can become dated…but a bold geometric like the chevron pattern will stand the test of time. This happens to be one of my favorite patterns. If you are moving into the new year in a new direction…let the chevron pattern take you there.

This is a hand-painted canvas rug from Maude Decor

Great painted chevron wall…I think this would be cool in a bold color too…Here is the link to the directions “The Tall Chick Blog”These bags are just great for any occasion…birthday goody bags or gift bags…Super cute! Find them here Cute Tape ($5 for 20! wow)

One of my projects…a clients dining room. Chevron pattern from Schumacher in 2 shades of grey (banded in hot pink skinny tape) YUMMY!

The colder months are definitely approaching us, having that perfect blanket for walks in the park or long car rides is essential.  I found a few that I am LOVING now!

Uimi blankets, an Australian company, is my new obsession.  They make 100% organic cotton blankets in bassinet and cot size.  The blankets are designed in beautiful color combos and chevron patterns.

The Sefte blanket is simple, elegant, and stylish.  Made out of 100% Baby Alpaca by artisans in Peru.  Available in one size and 3 different colors Pin, Sand, and Blue.

This hand knitted rainbow colored blanket really caught my eye, from Rocket and Bean. They are also perfect to throw over a glider to add a color to a nursery.

Nursery mobiles come in so many different styles, colors and functions.  They can move, play music, or just be bright and cheerful to catch your babies eye.  I love putting mobiles in different places of the nursery, such as over your glider or changing table.  Adding a simple more delicate mobile in those places adds a sweet touch to the room.  Pictured above, Bellini placed a neutral colored mobile over their slide top by Baby Jive.

Here is another mobile by Baby Jive, I love the colors and the  simplicity
it brings.

Blah Blah kids creates a “Dream Ring“, love that name!  Simple and still eye catching, perfect over your glider.

These colorful mobiles are designed by little dreamers inc.  What I love about these is that you can design your own, pick any color combo you want to coordinate with your bedding.  I think they are perfect for the older baby or toddler, who will get lost in the colors and the movement of the designs.
