Babymooning?

posted by Tracy No Comments

Babymoon has several meanings. The original meaning is a period of time that parents spend bonding with a recently-born baby. More recently the term has come to be used to describe a vacation taken by a couple that is expecting a baby in order to allow the couple to enjoy a final trip together before the many sleepless nights that usually accompany a newborn baby.

The concept of jetting away for a relaxing getaway before your little one arrives has been on the up rise for the last several years or so.  Is it still today?  Relaxing on a beach or on a cruise sounds great and wonderful, your last “real” getaway before you are a family of three or four.  I have been wondering, are “parents to be” spending money for the nursery and other expenses that come along with a new baby or on a “babymoon?”   Is taking the “babymoon” an  important thing to be checked off your list before baby is here or is your “babymoon” something your enjoying with your new arrival?

Handmade room decor

I have been on a “handmade” kick lately,  I love the sweetness that comes with a hand knitted doll or hand sewn pillow.   Here are a few of my recent favorites:

There are so many wooden letter trains out there but I loved the bright colors and designs that vibrant trains used.  They do custom work as well, so what ever your little one is into they can create that theme.

I Love pillows, the more the better.  Honey Pie design makes custom pillows using intials and weet words.  This “M” pillow is so fun for a playroom, make a word with a group of them or get each initial of your child’s name.

Who doesn’t want to snuggle with this bunny?  This bunny is so sweet and designed with joy by cherry time. They have so many adorable animals to choose from in a ton of soft colors,  a perfect gift.

I told you I love pillows!  So fun and bright colored retro pillows, these too would be so cool for a playroom. Get a bunch or add a pillow each year your child has a birthday.  These fabulous pillows are from num pillows.

It is the time of year when I am working on product development for the new season. Being a designer of children’s products, I am knee deep in gathered info on the rules and regulations of child safety. AHHH!!  Sometimes screams of frustration can be heard  from my studio windows!!!! Don’t get me wrong, these guidelines are very important for the safety of our children and I respect them all! It is understanding them that makes me crazy!!

I decided to look around on Etsy to see if I could find some old toys still circulating in their vintage category. Well I found some my kids played with and according to all the rules in effect now, I really don’t know how my kids survived or even the many generations before them. The good news is that we should all be thankful that there are so many people watching out for all of your children now. Sure we will still see an occasional recall, but in the end we have come a long way on demanding safety first!

When Pantone announces the color of the year, the fashion and interior design industries love to showcase that color.  We were excited to know it was such a fun and electric color that works well with so many other colors.

We love it for a big boys rooms with our Jessica collection in espresso, mixed with blues and whites.  So fun for a nursery, choose any of our cribs in espresso or mahogany color.

Try tangerine tango with turquoise shades , such as this bedding from Dwell studios.

We love the bohemian look, and Rikshaw does bohemian so well, this bedding set is called udaipur.

Add Tangerine Tango to your accessories and decor items, such as these new storage baskets by Serena & Lily.

Bring tangerine tango into your floors, this stripe and flat weave is from Dash & Albert.  We like how it brings in the tangerine tango but is softened with the washed out gray and cream stripes.

Bellini is an international juvenile furniture company in business for almost 30 years. Visit us at www.bellini.com for more information.

Almost a week has passed since we rang in 2012, and, if you’re like me, you’ve probably already broken most of your resolutions.  Blame it on the cupcakes at your neighbor’s birthday party, or the below freezing temperatures outside keeping you from your run, but at the end of the day, we have no one to blame but ourselves.  Why?  Because by making new year’s resolutions, many of us moms are adding additional pressures to our already stress-filled lives, rather than finding ways to alleviate some of the stress and establish equilibrium.  We tell ourselves we’ll exercise more, we’ll eat better, we’ll work harder, we’ll make more friends, we’ll start a new hobby, we’ll be a better wife, a better mother, a better daughter, a better sister….and so the list goes on and the pressures build up, almost certainly dooming us to failure.

In an effort to put an end to this cycle of perpetual stress and mounting expectations, I propose a new resolution for all of us new moms: this year, we will all find 15 minutes a day for ourselves.  These 15 minutes can be first thing in the morning, during a child’s nap, late at night before bed,… whenever fits into our schedules.  But, for 15 minutes every day, we will take a step back and do something for ourselves, without feeling the weight of expectations or demands of others.  Yes, we are moms, we are wives, we are daughters and sisters and friends, but we also are individuals.  It is my firm belief that in finding a few extra minutes for ourselves every day, we’ll feel better able to tackle the tasks before us and maybe, just maybe, next year we’ll keep another resolution for longer than one week.

Happy New Year, Mommies.  Cheers to you!

Faux Bois..Why (K)not?

posted by susan No Comments

I am pretty certain my obsession for faux bois aka “false wood” came from this Ford station wagon. It’s pretty crazy that something so obviously fake would have such an impact on my design taste. But I adore all things faux bois (sounds so much nicer in French) I think my new design mantra this year will be…. “every house should have something in faux bois”….Brilliant!

Susan Tollefsen:  Quirky, Fun, Stylish…with a Twist Raleigh, NC-based Susan Tollefsen (Susan Tollefsen Interiors) has been an interior designer for 12 years but she’s been working at design in one form or another most of her life – from crafting Barbie’s Dream Drapes as a child to styling dorm rooms in college. Design has been a lifelong passion and she always brings freshness and a new way of looking at things to every project. Flip through her portfolio and you’ll find a sense of style that is fun yet thought-provoking…ever-stylish but with a twist!

I am a “List” person and love to be organized.  So when I was going through the design process for my children’s nursery, there was no exception.  One of my favorite questions to ask myself was “is this going to be a bedroom and playroom”?  When you answer that question you open up a lot of design options as well.  For example, adding creative storage space for toys and books. I have always loved that my children’s room were also their playrooms, even as babies.   Designer Dad Stephen Saint-Onge says to access storage and rotate toys from week to week so your baby is interested.  I like to hang a book shelf about 5″ from the floor so your little one can explore and pick out their favorite. When picking out your furniture make sure it can grow with your child.  For example, picking out a crib that converts into a full size bed.  Bellini has several different crib models that when converted the front and back head boards are also the head/foot boards of a full size bed.

Define the space, in other words let your little one have an area of the room that can be creative, fun, and their own.  For nurseries you can have area of soft toys and pillows, then change as the baby grows.  I have always like to use chalk board paint on a wall or closet doors, it’s an everlasting creative space for your older toddler or tween.

Mom-To-Be Jessica Simpson recently spoke about her odd pregnancy food cravings, many of which involve salt. The singer (who is expecting her first child) shared on Twitter that “Kraft mac and cheese with Lawry’s seasoning salt is the breakfast for pregnant champions!!!”.

Last month, she told Rachel Ray during an interview that “This week it’s peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, toasted. And then, I’ll put some salt on my hand like I’m taking a tequila shot and then take a bite of the sandwich.”
