Little Cord Art is a unique way to display colorful art with the most special meaning. It was thought up by parents Stephanie Duffy and Keith Duffy, who is a board-certified dermatologist and pathologist. Little Cord Art creates one-of-kind wall art using a cross-section of your baby’s umbilical cord. It is then stained to develop different color schemes and photographed through a microscope. The result is a very personal and conversation-worthy piece of art.
Did you know the umbilical cord is extraordinary because it is the only organ that two individuals—mom and baby—ever share? Wow! Plus, since every cord’s cell structure is different, our art is truly one-of-a-kind. After hearing about this concept, we needed to know more. We had the chance to chat with Stephanie Duffy and find out what people are saying about Little Cord Art.
1. What inspired you to create this idea for wall art?
Keith and I made the first piece when our first child was born. When I was pregnant with our son in 2009, a routine ultrasound revealed that the umbilical cord had two blood vessels rather than the typical three—a condition that occurs in roughly 10% of pregnancies. Because Keith is a medical doctor with fellowship training in pathology, he was keen to look at the histology (microscopic study of tissue) of the cord after our son arrived. It looked beautiful and we made it into a canvas, which became a conversation piece in our home.
2.What 3 words describe Little Cord Art?
One-of-a-kind, meaningful, surprising.
We’d also say that Little Cord Art artworks represent the intersection of art, science, and the adventure of parenthood.
3. What do your customers say about their special artwork once they receive it.
Here are a few quotes:
“We really wanted unique artwork for our baby’s nursery and it doesn’t get any more unique than Little Cord Art! Plus, it is so meaningful and looks lovely.”
“We have received so many compliments on our daughter’s Little Cord Art. We love the color and texture that it brings to her room and know we’ll enjoy it for years to come.”
“After people get over their amazement at what the art is made from they always comment on its beauty. We’re so glad we captured one of life’s little miracles through Little Cord Art.”
“We love our prints from Little Cord Art–the colors, the subtle and intricate patterns, and most of all, the fact that it came from our baby.”
“The instructions for creating the art were clear, the process was smooth, and the images turned out even better than we expected.”
4. Any future projects you are working on you would like to share?
As a new company (we launched the company almost a year ago) right now we’re focused on making Little Cord Art canvases that make our clients happy. And they’re fun for us to create because each one is different. But we enjoy exploring the blend of art and science so who knows what the future will bring.
