Leave it up to a new mommy that has worked her way through the fashion industry to create an adorable but practical baby line. Kimberly Goodwin, founder and designer of Snapping Turtle kids is the former Promotion Director for Lucky magazine and Associate Director of Fashion Merchandising for Vogue. In the summer of 2010, as a first-time mom, Kimberly was ready for a day at the beach in Nantucket with her three-month-old daughter, Reese. Having packed everything but the crib, Goodwin was prepared for anything—until the baby needed changing. Only an hour into the day, Goodwin struggled to pull off Reese’s wet suit, change her diaper and put the suit back on, all while the infant wailed. She thought, there has to be an easier way. Why don’t they make bathing suits with snaps? An idea turned into a mission and Snapping Turtle Kids was born.
1. How does your daughter inspire your line today? Each collection in my line is named after favorite vacation spots. A number of them are places I have been with my daughter and loved taking her to. I am always looking for inspiration from my daughter on colors she likes and patterns that remind me of summers spent by the beach. I recently had a baby boy in March so you will see in my resort collection a boys suit that matches the girls in a seersucker pattern with our signature turtle. I had to give the little man some love too!
2. What’s your best selling design? I actually had to look this one up since it wasn’t very obvious. The palm beach ruffle has been my best seller. Although the Capri and the Nantucket ruffle are not far behind.
3. What 3 words best describe Snapping Turtle? Functional. Fashionable. Beach Chic (can I have 4? )
4. Do you have any future plans you would like to share, maybe new designs or any new products added to the collection? Yes! We are expanding up to size 6 for girls, (the suits will only have snaps up to size 3T) but I have had a lot of requests to make suits for older girls so I decided to give it a try. In addition, we will have 2 boys suits in the line and look out for a collaboration with another young designer on a mother/daughter matching tunic cover up coming out by resort!
5.How do you juggle your company, being a mom and “me time”? It is definitely not easy! I feel like I am constantly wearing different hats throughout the day. Wife, mom, entrepreneur, but at the end of the day my family is my first priority so I try to not sweat the small stuff and literally take each day as it comes. I try to block off time to go to the gym a few times a week to just unwind and enjoy an hour to myself which I think really helps. I am the queen of making to do lists at the end of the day so I think that keeps me organized and helps me prioritize…. even if it is a few pages long!
Thanks Kimberly, we can not wait to see your new collections and get our hands on the boy’s line!
