I founded SwaddleDesigns® in 2002. I’m a registered nurse and a mom of two. The inspiration for SwaddleDesigns was sparked when I visited families with new babies in their homes and I noticed they struggled with swaddling for two reasons. First, the blanket they were using was too small or too thick, and second, they could not remember how to make a good secure swaddle. The parents consistently asked me to show them – how to swaddle.
I wanted to help new parents, so I searched the market place for an appropriate swaddling blanket. My mom, also a nurse, had sewn lightweight flannel blankets for my first child as her mother had done for her. However, there were no large square lightweight blankets in the marketplace. I researched what medical experts at hospitals across the US used for wrapping babies…lightweight flannel. So, I used my healthcare background and design education from the Art Institute of Seattle to develop the Ultimate Swaddling Blanket – large and square – and I added swaddling instructions sewn to the edge of the blanket, so parents have an effective swaddling technique at their fingertips (patent pending).
SwaddleDesigns first customer was a major hospital that purchased 4,000 blankets! They understood the importance of swaddling and the educational value of my blanket. During the development stage of our blanket I consulted with PhDs in infant research, so in addition to the cute pictorial instructions on the front, on the back of the tag I included helpful tips reminding parents to place baby on back to sleep, and to not overdress or underdress baby for sleep.
Swaddling is important because it helps babies transition from womb to world, reduces incidence of SIDS, helps babies sleep better and longer, and decreases awakenings due to the startle reflex. By helping parents master the art of swaddling, the Ultimate Swaddling Blanket is a great confidence builder for new parents.
Swaddling has made a revival in the US since 2002, and now there are other swaddling gadgets and products available. However, industry and medical experts tell me SwaddleDesigns blankets are still the best.
Over the past several years, SwaddleDesigns product line has grown significantly, and I continue to design the SwaddleDesigns products and exclusive prints, and I select every component based on its color, texture, durability and quality. I design with baby‛s best interest in mind, to help new parents and with your style at heart.
